We never weary of new edition« of Whittier'» poem« ; and the delicious volume of his " Ballads of New England," which his publishers, Messrs. Fields, Oegood & Co., have sent out In anticipation of the Christmas season, is worthy of all praise The ballads are household words—stanzas and couplets from them all are in the memory of the majority of readers—yet they have almost a new music and a new meaning when read again by the help of the beautiful illustrations which adorn the volume. The landscapes have been drawn chiefly by Mr. Harry Fenn, and Mr. Whittier says that he recognizes in such as refer to Hew England the scenery familiar to him from boyhood. But the figure pieces vie in power with the landscapes, as the names of Eytinge, Darley, Hennessy, Fredericks, Winslow Homer, Granville Perkins, and others give abundant assurance. Altogether It would he safe to predict that the holidays will not bring you a more tasteful presentation hook than this one.—New York Evening Post. 1969
